Michigan’s K-12 schools and colleges recorded 63 new COVID-19 outbreaks last week — up from 50 the previous week — according to data released by the state Monday afternoon.

The new outbreak information comes a day after the state issued new restrictions, including ordering all high schools operating in-person classes to shift to virtual learning for the next three weeks because of a surge in COVID cases across the state. That directive takes effect Wednesday and is part of new policies that limit the operations of restaurants, gyms, and casinos. It also targets indoor gatherings.

Many schools districts across Michigan, including Detroit Public Schools Community District, have transitioned from face-to-face classes to online classes as worries rise about the increase in positive cases.

Data show there have been 264,576 positive COVID cases since the state recorded its first case in March. That number includes 12,763 reported Sunday and Monday. There have been 8,049 COVID deaths

The state each Monday releases data showing how many COVID outbreaks there have been in K-12 schools and higher education institutions.

Schools are considered an outbreak site if local health departments report two or more COVID-19 cases on school grounds, and if the patients may have shared exposure on school grounds and are from different households.

Last week, Grand Rapids Christian High School and Johannesburg-Lewiston Elementary School had the highest number of cases related to an outbreak, with each recording nine positive cases.

In addition to the 63 new outbreaks, there are nearly 190 ongoing cases from previous weeks. The Detroit school district has ongoing outbreaks at Munger, Western International, and Earhart schools.
