Good morning! School might be out for the summer but the Detroit school board has a packed agenda for its monthly meeting tonight. Among matters before the board is a potentially controversial plan to hire teachers with minimal training. That could include teachers certified by a for-profit online teachers college.
Superintendent Nikolai Vitti says hiring teachers with alternative certifications who might not have had much time in a classroom is not ideal, but given the severity of the district’s teacher shortage, the district needs to consider all options. “We need certified teachers to fill vacancies and to reduce class size,” he said.
